Grant Union Athletic Department Quick Guide for Parents

Travel and Transportation

How do I sign my athlete out after an away contest (parent, non-custodial parent, other adult, emergencies)?

Your Head Coach (or an assigned Assistant Coach) will have a sign out sheet for you to sign as the custodial parent, and then you are free to take your child.  If you would like someone else (must be an adult-not a student) to sign out your child after an away contest, please submit this (physical note or email) one day prior to departure.

Can the bus Drop Off at alternate site?

We can do this.  Please make sure that someone is waiting to pick up, a vehicle is available (if student is a driver), or it is near the home.  Student safety comes first.

Can the bus Pick Up at alternate site (similar to drop off)?

Generally, yes.  Please contact the AD one day prior to departure to arrange this.

Can athletes drive themselves?  Can the parent?

Students may not drive themselves to away contests.  However, parents may drive their athletes if circumstances dictate this (Dr. appointments, etc.).  Please arrange with the AD one day prior to departure.

Can a parent take their athlete during an overnight stay?

Yes.  Again, we just ask for notice 24 hours in advance.  Additionally, it becomes a parent responsibility to make sure their athlete attends all required team functions during the trip and the parent may not return the athlete to the overnight accommodations once they are signed out for the day, they may only be returned to the coach’s supervision at the next required team function.  They must then be signed out again if the parent wishes to take them home.

When should I arrive to pick up my athlete?

Please remind your athlete (as will coaches) to communicate when they depart from the site, and then again when they reach Long Creek, Dayville, Seneca, or Prairie City.  Please plan on being a bit early.

Attendance

What are the Attendance protocols for eligibility?

Students must be in attendance for the 8 periods immediately before practice/contests.  Prearranged Absence forms allow for an exception to this rule (instructions are on the form in the office and must be completed the day before the absence, give yourself plenty of time to complete this process, probably 2 days).  A Doctor’s note for an appointment or emergency might be an exception, just communicate with the AD as quickly as possible.

What happens if my athlete is tardy or absent from practices, games, or team functions?

Each Head Coach decides attendance rules and consequences for their program.  This information will be provided at the parent meeting.  An absence/tardy might be excused or unexcused by team policy and coach’s discretion.

Communication

What if I have a concern or complaint about a Coach or the AD?

Please communicate with us early if you have concerns.  Have your athlete meet with the coach and talk.  If they are not comfortable with this, parents can help request this meeting.  If a parent is not part of this initial meeting, and the resolution is not acceptable, parents should request a meeting with the coach.  If you are not comfortable setting this meeting, the AD can assist.  If the meeting with the coach is not satisfactory, request a meeting with the AD.  This process continues to the Principal, Superintendent, and the School Board.

Where do I find schedules?

GUHS Website: https://guhs.grantschooldistrict.org/  Click on Athletics.  Some schedules are locally managed and others are linked to OSAA.  We update this source as soon as changes are made.  No schedule is permanent, so check back often.  Short notice changes do occur, these will go out on social media and school messenger texts.

General Questions

Will there be Sunday or Holiday Practices?

Generally, there will be no Sunday practices.  Holiday practices are allowed with the approval of the AD and will be planned in advance.

Is fundraising required for my athlete?

No.  Participation in a fundraiser is not a condition of being on a team and opportunities within that team will not be impacted by this choice.  It is important to note that fundraising efforts are an important part of providing a quality experience for our athletes.

When are Physicals required?  What about Participation Forms?

A physical is required every two years.  Participation forms must be completed each year for each athlete.

What if my athlete wants to turn out for a sport late?

We want students to participate in our programs.  Late turnout is allowed up to 3 weeks from the OSAA start date.  Later turnout is up to the discretion of the Head Coach and AD.

What are the Dress and Grooming standards?

School dress code generally applies to our athletes.  Coaches may have additional standards (approved by the AD).

What does it take to letter in a sport?

Each Head Coach will provide the lettering requirements at the start of the season during the parent meeting.

Social Media use by student-athletes

What are the expectations for Senior Recognition?

Senior night is a great way to send off our players and honor the time commitment by both parents and athletes to our programs. Given that this is a celebration of parents, athletes, and the support of the community we want to keep the focus on the entire school community.  We also want to ensure that all athletes feel equally special and supported at this event.  Our goal with this policy is to make certain that none of our students feels “left out” and/or less important.  Additionally, we want to honor our opponents who have traveled to play us by keeping our senior night events to a reasonable duration. To accomplish this, we will have a standardized system for Senior Recognition events for all Athletic Teams.   The specifics will be provided to Senior Parents.

Eligibility

How does my athlete stay Academically Eligible?

Athletes must meet OSAA Eligibility Requirements.  They must pass 2.5 credits the prior term as well as be on track to graduate (complete 4.5 credits start of sophomore, 10 credits start of junior, and 17 credits start of senior year).  Please help your athlete understand that they are a student first, athlete second.

How does school discipline impact my athlete’s eligibility?

If your student has outstanding discipline (skipped detention/ISS) or was the subject of In/Out of School Suspension they will not be allowed to participate in practice or contests on that date.

How does my athlete make up their missed work/homework?

It is the student’s responsibility to contact their teachers or utilize class resources prior to departure to ensure they know what will be missed when they are gone and what is due upon return.   Students will be required to turn in any work that was due on the date of an absence upon the date of return at the start of class (unless prior arrangements for additional time are made with the teacher).  Any assignment/s given on the day of absence due to an activity will be due on the day of return to school (unless prior arrangements for additional time are made with the teacher).
